Most of the communication between staff and patients in renal care presupposes an understanding of renal function. Information about renal disease, renal failure and renal treatment only make sense if there is a shared understanding of renal function.
There is, however, extensive prerequisite knowledge from the biomedical domain which is essential for making sense of any information relating to renal function. As such shared understanding does not exist for many of these concepts, effective communication cannot be achieved in so much of the interaction between staff and patients in renal care.
