Assessments Glossary

The terms used in the Assessments subsystem are described below. The relationships between data, and concepts used in this subsystem, are explained in detail in the Understanding Assessments section.

Action Date - Unit Assessment Item

 

this date is inserted automatically when there has been a change to a student unit assessment item. It indicates that changes have occurred and that these changes need to be applied to related student unit attempts. The date is deleted after the changes are automatically applied to student unit attempts.

Allowable Materials - Examination

 

information about materials that students are allowed to take into an examination.

Announcements - Examination

 

information to be announced just prior to commencement of, or during an examination.

Apportionment Percentage

 

is the percentage of the total assessment that the assessment pattern item normally represents.

Assessment Course Type

 

is a course type to which an assessment item is restricted. If an assessment course type exists, unit assessment items can only be assigned to students whose course type is one of the restricted course types.

Assessment Item

 

is a single piece of assessment that a student may be required to complete as part of, or as the entire requirements of, a unit.

Assessment Item Assessor

Assessment Item ID (Assessment ID)

 

is a System generated number used to uniquely identify an assessment item.

Assessment Item Variation Cutoff Date (Alias)

 

is used to warn against further unit assessment item variations in a teaching period.

Assessment Pattern Code

 

is the institution defined code for an assessment pattern. Assessment patterns enable the grouping of assessment items.

Assessment Pattern ID

 

is a System generated number used to uniquely identify an assessment pattern.

Assessment Type

 

is assigned to each assessment item in order to classify the item. Assessment types can be either examinable or non-examinable and are optionally mapped to a System assessment type.

Assessor

 

is a person who assesses students' assessment items or who otherwise has a role related to the assessment of students.

Assessor Type

 

is a means of classifying assessors. Example: Marker, Tutor, Unit-Chair.

Attempt Number - Student Unit Attempt Assessment Item

 

is assigned to an instance of a student unit assessment item to indicate the number of times a student has attempted the assessment item.

Booking Cost

 

the cost of hiring the venue.

Collect Mark indicator

 

specifies whether or not marks may be recorded when keying results.

Constraints - Examination

 

any constraints to be taken into consideration when scheduling an examination. Example: must be scheduled after paper 1.

Coordinator - Venue

 

the person responsible for the coordination of the venue.

Creation Date - Student Unit Attempt Assessment Item

 

the date on which an assessment item was attached to a student unit attempt.

Creation Method - Grade

 

describes the creation method which was used to load a student unit outcome. Example: Keying, Upload.

Date Notified - Special Consideration Application

 

a date inserted by the System to indicate when a special consideration application outcome notification letter was created.

Default indicator - Assessor Type

 

indicates whether the assessor type is the default type assigned to the assessor record which is automatically created by the System each time a unit assessment item is created.

Default indicator - Assessment Item

 

indicates whether the assessment item is a default item for the unit. Default items are automatically assigned to students enrolled in the unit.

Default Outstanding Grade indicator

 

indicates whether the grade is the default grade used to replace blank grades by the Insert Administrative grades process.

Default Pattern indicator - Assessment Pattern

 

indicates whether the assessment pattern is a default pattern for the unit. Default patterns are automatically assigned to students enrolled in the unit.

Deletion Date - Unit Assessment Item

 

the date on which the assessment item was deleted from the unit.

Deletion Date - Unit Assessment Pattern

 

the date on which the assessment pattern was deleted from the unit.

Deletion Date - Student Unit Attempt Assessment Item

 

the date on which the assessment item was deleted from the unit.

Derive Grade indicator

 

is used to configure the online results keying process. Specifies whether or not the grade should be derived from the keyed mark.

Due Date - Unit Assessment Item

 

the date for completion/submission of the unit assessment item. Typically recorded for non-examinable assessment items.

Electronic Outcome Upload File

 

comma delimited text file of student unit attempt outcomes to be uploaded into the System by an academic or nominated person.

End Date - Grading Schema

 

the end date of the grading schema version.

End Time - Exam Session

 

is the time the examination session is to conclude.

Estd Proc Days (Estimated Processing Days)

 

is the expected number of days that it will take to process the special consideration application.

Exam Material Type

 

is the code for an allowed, not allowed or supplied examination material.

Exam Supervisor

 

is a person responsible for the supervision of an examination. 

Exam Supervisor Type

 

indicates the level of responsibility allocated to the supervisor, and the role they will play in the supervision of exams.

Examinable

 

is an assessment item that is an examination. 

Examinable indicator

 

this specifies whether the assessment type is examinable or non-examinable.

Examination Instance indicator - Supervisor Allocation

 

specifies whether or not the supervisor is assigned to particular assessment item/s within an exam session at a particular venue. 

Examination Period

 

the period of time in which examinations are held. 

Examination Venue indicator

 

specifies whether or not the supervisor is assigned to a particular venue within an exam session, rather than to one or more particular examinations at the venue in the session. 

External Grade

 

is a grade displayed to students and the public. For example: official results, noticeboards, academic transcript or the Callista Connect results application. Internal grades are those used by the institution internally. For example: academic history.

File Type

 

corresponds to a correspondence type, determining the type of results file produced for publication (e.g. file for newspaper).

Finalised indicator

 

specifies whether or not the outcome for the student unit attempt is finalised.

GPA Value

 

is the numerical value assigned to the grade for use in calculation of a student's Grade Point Average.

Grade

 

is a code representing the grade which indicates the student's level of achievement in the unit attempt. Each grade is mapped to a System Result Type.

Grade Exists

 

is an electronic results upload configuration setting which defines the action taken by the System when a grade (outcome) already exists in the database for a student unit attempt in the upload file.

Grade Inclusion indicators

 

designates where unit attempts with the grade can or cannot be published. Example: Noticeboard, Newspaper.

Grade Invalid

 

is an electronic upload configuration setting which defines the action taken by the System when the grade specified for a student unit attempt in the upload file does not exist in the grading schema being used.

Grade Point Average

 

a measure which aggregates grades obtained by a student in a relevant set of studies, and produces an average figure taking into account the total study load attempted.

Grade Rank

 

indicates the rank of the grade in relation to other grades within the same grading schema. Is used for comparison of grades in rules and for sort ordering in reports.

Grading Schema

 

describes the set of available marks and grades which can be used in the assessment of student unit attempts.

Grading Schema Code

 

identifies the grading schema.

Ignore Warnings indicator - Exam Supervisor Allocation

 

suppresses warning messages when defaulting exam supervisors. 

In Charge indicator - Exam Supervisors

 

specifies the supervisor as the senior or organising supervisor for an exam session at a particular venue.

Include Resolved Outcomes indicator - Non-enrolled Unit Outcomes

 

when selected displays resolved outcomes when performing a query on non-enrolled student outcomes.

Invalid Mark/Grade Allowed indicator

 

is used to configure the online results keying process. Specifies whether or not invalid mark/grade combinations can be keyed. An invalid combination exists when the keyed mark is outside the range of marks associated with the keyed grade in the grading schema.

Item Limit

 

is the maximum number of assignments (assessment items) that the assessor should be allocated. This value is used by the assignment tracking process to limit the number of assignments sent to each assessor for marking.

Key Check-Digit indicator

 

is used to configure the online results keying process. Specifies whether or not the two-digit check digit must be entered before a result can be keyed for a student. The check digits are the last two digits of the person ID.

Length or Duration - Assessment Item

 

the length or duration of a non-examinable assessment item. Examples: an essay with a length of 2000 words, a seminar with a duration of 15 min.

Logical Delete Date - Unit Assessment Item

Mail Delivery Working Days

 

indicates the average number of working days required for correspondence to reach an examination location using standard mail.

Mark

 

is a numerical value which indicates the student's level of achievement in the unit attempt.

Mark Entry Mandatory indicator

 

is used to configure the online results keying and electronic upload processes. Specifies whether or not a mark must be recorded.

Mark Range - Grade

 

is a minimum and maximum numerical value which designates the range of marks a student can achieve to receive a certain grade.

Mark/Grade Invalid

 

is an electronic upload configuration setting which defines the action taken by the System when the mark/grade combination recorded for a student unit attempt in the upload file is invalid.

Newspaper

No. of Seats (Seats) - Venue

 

indicates the maximum number of seats in a venue.

No Course Attempts - Electronic Results Upload

 

is an electronic upload configuration setting which defines the action taken by the System if the person specified in the validation file does not have any recorded course attempts.

Non-Allow(able) Materials - Examination

 

information about materials that students are not allowed to take into an examination.

Non-examinable - Assessment Item

 

an assessment item that is not considered to be examination. Examples: assignment, project, recital.

Noticeboard

Notional Percentage Grade Distribution

 

indicates the normal expected minimum and maximum percentage of student to be awarded the specified grade for a particular unit offering.

Official Notification

Outcome

 

is the outcome of a student unit attempt assessment item.

Outcome Date

 

is the date on which an outcome was recorded for the students attempt at the assessment item.

Override Due Date - Student Unit Attempt Assessment Item

 

an assessment item due date extension granted to a student, normally for an assignment.

Override End Time - Exam Session Instance

 

used when the examination end time differs from the session end time.

Override End Time - Supervisors

 

is the time a supervisor ends supervision of an examination. If no value is specified the System will default to the end time of the exam session.

Override Start Time - Exam Session Instance

 

used when the examination start time differs from the standard institutional examination session times.

Override Start Time - Supervisors

 

is the time a supervisor starts supervision of an examination. If no value is specified the System will default to the start time of the exam session.

Overwrite Grades Allowed indicator

 

is used to configure the online results keying process. Specifies whether or not a saved outcome may be overwritten when keying results. This indicator must be set to allow double-keying of results.

Paper Name/ Short Paper Name

 

is the name of the examination paper, which is normally printed on the cover sheet of a theory exam.

Person Doesn't Exist

 

is an electronic results upload configuration setting which defines the action to be taken by the System if a person recorded in the upload file does not exist in the System.

Perusal Time

 

is the amount of time allowed for reading the exam paper prior to commencement of the examination.

Primary Assessor

Primary Assessor indicator

 

specifies whether the assessor is the senior assessor for the assessment item.

Priority Code - Venue

 

indicates an order of preference when allocating examinations to venues. There is no associated System functionality. 

Quantity Per Student - Supplied Exam Materials

 

indicates the quantity of an exam material type to be supplied to each student for an examination.

Question or Title - Assessment Item

 

is the question or title of a non-examinable assessment item.

Reference - Unit Assessment Item

 

the identifying code (numbers or characters) of a unit assignment or examination or other assessment item. Used to enable easy identification of an assessment item when more than one of the same type exists for a unit.

Resolved indicator - Non-enrolled Outcomes

 

specifies whether or not the non-enrolled outcome has been resolved.

Result

Scheduled indicator - Assessment Item

 

specifies whether or not an examinable assessment item is to be included in the exam timetable.

Session Date

 

is the date on which the examination session is held. 

Session Number

 

a number that identifies the session within the selected examination calendar.

Sessions At Institution - Exam Supervisors

 

is the number of examination sessions a supervisor has supervised at the home institution. Indicates the supervisors level of experience.

Sessions At Other Institutions - Exam Supervisors

 

is the number of examination sessions a supervisor has supervised at other institutions. Indicates the supervisors level of experience.

Sought Outcome - Special Consideration

 

the special consideration outcome that the student has identified as the desired result of their application.

Sought Outcome indicator - Special Consideration

 

specifies whether the special consideration outcome is included in the list of available sought outcomes.

Special Consideration Category

 

identifies the basis for a special consideration application.

Special Consideration Outcome

 

is the result of a special consideration application.

Special Grade Type

 

system grade types used by the System to identify students requiring deferred, special or supplementary examinations. details of which are passed to the exam timetabling subsystem. Also used to identify grades which may be overwritten (replaced) during the electronic results upload process.

Start Date - Grading Schema

 

is the start date of the grading schema.

Start Time - Exam Session

 

is the time the examination session is to commence.

Student Unit Attempt Assessment Item

Supervisor Instructions

 

are special instructions to be conveyed to supervisors who will be administering an examination.

Supervisor Limit

 

is the maximum number of supervisors that should normally  be allocated to a venue.

Supplementary Assessment

 

extra assessment held for a student usually after the normal period for assessments where the student has already undertaken the assessment at the scheduled time but has failed to achieve an acceptable standard of performance. When supplementary assessment is granted, it is ususally the outcome of a special consideration application.

Supplied Materials - Examination

 

information about materials that are to be supplied to students undertaking an examination.

System Assessment Type

 

is the assessment type to which institution defined assessment types are optionally mapped. The currently available types are ASSIGNMENT and NONCENTRAL.

System Assigned indicator - Grading Schema

 

specifies whether or not the grade can only be assigned by system processes.

System Result Type

 

the System defined result type which is attributed to a grade. The available types are PASS, FAIL, INCOMPLETE, WITHDRAWN.

Times Keyed

 

indicates the number of times the outcome has been keyed.

Unit Assessment Item

Unit Discontinued

 

is an electronic results upload configuration setting which defines the action taken by the System when a unit attempt recorded in the upload file is discontinued.

Unit Grading Schema Precedence indicator

 

specifies whether any grading schema attached to the unit offering option takes precedence over the grading schema attached to the enrolled student's course offering. Setting the indicator (ticked) causes the unit grading schema to take precedence

Unit Not Enrolled

 

is an electronic results upload configuration setting which defines the action taken by the System when a student is not enrolled in the unit recorded in the upload file.

Venue

 

is a venue available for use during an examination session.

Venue Code

 

is the unique code identifying an examination venue.

Version Number - Grading Schema

 

is a System generated number used to identify the version of a grading schema.

Working Time

 

is the amount of time a student has to complete an examination.
