CRSW1020 - Component Categories

Table of Contents

Overview

This page is used to create and maintain institution-defined Component Categories and map them to a System Component Category: UNITS, TEXT or COMPOSITE.

A Component Category is used to define a Component (CRSW2020) that is added to a Course Plan Structure Version (CPSV) (CRSW2040).

This page is a Reference Data page that is used to set up data required in Course Plan Structure pages. For example, Component Categories created here comprise the List of Values for the Component Category field on the Components (CRSW2020) page.

To use this page, it is expected that you will be a Course Administrator who is authorised to establish Reference data for Course Plan Structures.

This page is accessed via the main menu.

Field Descriptions

The following table describes each field on the CRSW1020 page, including applicable Table values. An asterisk (*) indicates the field is mandatory when creating a new Component Category.

Note: Field labels are institution-configurable.

Field: Description:
* Component Category Unique institution-defined name of the Component Category.
Once the record is saved its name cannot be changed.

The Component Category must be mapped to a System Category. Once saved, the Component Category is included in the List of Values for the Component Category field on the Component (CRSW2020) page. Closed Components are not included.

A Component Category cannot be deleted once it is associated with an Open Component.

COMPONENT_CAT.COMPONENT_CAT
* Description A short description of the Component Category. Use up to 60 characters.

COMPONENT_CAT.DESCRIPTION
* System Component Category The System Component Category to which an institution-defined Component Category is mapped. There are three System Component Categories:

1. TEXT - A string of text that may include hyperlinks. This Component Category also allows Special Requirements Codes to be added for reference.
A Component with a TEXT Component Category is displayed as a text-only page in the public-facing Course Plan Enquiry system.

2. UNITS - A Unit or list of Units, as follows:

  • A list of individual Unit Codes defined by Unit Code, and/or
  • An SQL statement that will return Unit Codes and Versions to identify a group of units with similar characteristics during enquiry. For example, in the Course Plan Enquiry system, a Component with a UNITS Component Category displays a list of units from which an enquirer can select when building their Course Plan.

3. COMPOSITE - A combination of Components.
In the Course Plan Enquiry system, a Component with a COMPOSITE Component Category displays a list of Components from which an enquirer can choose when building their Course Plan, for example, a Component called 'MAJOR' with a COMPOSITE Component Category, is made up of a number of Core and Elective Components.

You can map multiple 'open' Component Categories to a System Component Category.

COMPONENT_CAT.S_COMPONENT_CAT
System Default Select this checkbox to mark an open Component Category (mapped to a System Component Category) as the System Default.

You must specify a System Default for only one of each type of System Component Category, i.e. TEXT, COMPOSITE and UNITS, to which a Component Category is mapped. When a CPSV Component is first created it is automatically assigned a Component Category mapped to one of the System Default values. This Component Category can be changed manually, if required.

COMPONENT_CAT.SYSTEM_DEFAULT_IND
Closed Select this checkbox to close the Component Category.

'Closed' Categories cannot be assigned to CPSV Components and cannot be made the System Default.
