The courses and units defined in this subsystem are used extensively throughout other parts of the SMS system including the Applicant Portal, and throughout Course Plan Structure Version web pages. Examples include:

Explanatory diagrams and detailed information are given in Understanding Course Structure and Planning, while specific terms used in this subsystem are to be found in the Glossary. Help in using particular forms is accessed via the Subsystem Table of Contents by clicking the 'Top of CS & P' button above.

Users

Information recorded in the Course Structure and Planning subsystem is predominantly reference data. The ability to add, modify and delete data within this subsystem is restricted to certain categories of users who are the functional specialists responsible for maintaining details of the institution's courses and units. Most other users are provided with read-only access to this subsystem and will use course and unit details within other subsystems or through special enquiry or reporting interfaces. For example, course and unit details are used extensively in the Admissions, Enrolment, and Assessment subsystems.

Users of this subsystem should have a broad understanding of system-wide features and functionality. This manual provides the necessary information in the System Overview chapter. Help for a specific topic can be found using the Index.

Multi-Byte Characters:
Please note that the use of multi-byte characters is designed for and partially supported in specific areas of Callista only (i.e. in Proposals (user-defined fields), Communication Templates and Items, and Thesis). Therefore, it is advisable that you use single-byte characters only in the Course Structure and Planning (CRS) subsystem, as some multi-byte characters are equal to more than one byte at the storage level and therefore could be interpreted incorrectly by some processes.
For more information, see the Character Sets section in System Wide Features.
