Stages of a Course are institution defined milestones by which progression in a Course can be measured. Typically, institutions view 'completion' of a year of a Course as a measure of progression. For example, a three year degree would usually have three Stages, year 1, year 2, and year 3. However, institutions or organisational units can use this facility to define Course Stages in any way they please. Institutions then apply rules to determine if a Stage has been completed.

This form is used to:

  • record the Stages of individual Courses
  • record an override description for a Stage of a Course
  • inquire on the rule applying to a Course Stage
  • access RULF2000, where rule text can be edited

The institution defined set of Course Stage types is maintained using CRSF12F0.

In the current release of Callista, there is only one rule - Course Stage Completion, and no process which can automatically evaluate whether a student has satisfied the requirements of the rule.

In a later release, a broader range of Course Stage rules will be available, together with a broader range of rule options (see RULF2000 in the context of a Course Stage rule) with which to define Course Stages.

This form can be accessed:

  • Directly from a menu, permitting Course Versions to be queried in this form.
  • In context from the Maintain Basic Course Details form (CRSF1210). Select the Other Course Detail button at the bottom, and then select Course Stage (CRSF12D0). Return to CRSF1210 to query a new Course Version.

Refer to Understanding Rules for further details on creating rules and to Course Stage Rules for information on syntax.

Rules/Notes:

The Course Stage Rules button opens an overlay at the bottom of the main block called Course Stage Rule. This block allows Rule information to be added. The Back button returns you to the main two blocks, Course Version and Course Stage. See below for further details.

Record the required Stages for a Course Version and save.

The Override Description field provides the ability to override the standard name for a Course Stage.

For example, an organisational unit may call its year 1 'Foundation' year. This can be accommodated within the Course Stage structure of the institution by the use of the override description.

For a selected Course Stage, select the Course Stage Rules button. The existing Course rule is displayed. The rule text field displays the detail of the rule for the context Course Version. Where no rule text has been recorded for a Course Version, an UNDEFINED lamp is displayed adjacent to the rule description.

Selecting the Edit Rule button navigates to the Maintain Rule form (RULF2000) where the rule can be modified.
