Course Structure and Planning

Introduction

The Course Structure and Planning subsystem is used for recording and maintaining details to fully define the following, and facilitate projections and costing for them:

• Courses
• Units
• Course Groups
• Unit sets (including majors)
• Sub units (modules)

including their:

• Stages of development
• Versions
• Attributes
• Offerings
• Structures
• Discontinuations
• Rules
• History

The courses and units defined in this subsystem are used extensively throughout other parts of the SMS system including the Applicant Portal, and throughout Course Plan Structure Version web pages. Examples include:

• Admissions
  Prospective students apply for admission (including via the Applicant Portal) to courses (and units in some cases) and are made offers of enrolment in courses.
• Enrolments
  Students are enrolled in courses, units and unit sets.
  Courses and units may be the basis for Advanced Standing applications. Advanced Standing may be granted in units.
  Course Plan Structure Versions are made up of course versions and components related to a course. A CPSV defines one or more pathways of study that individual students may follow to complete a course to achieve a desired outcome. Once created, staff and students are able to interact with a published CPSV and define an 'individual' Course Plan based on the CPS they are viewing.
• Assessments
  Units have Assessment items (for example, exams, assignments), and courses and units have Grading Schema.
• Progression
  Courses have Progression rules (rules may also be at other levels, such as Course Type, Course Group etc.).
• Statistics
  Unit and course details are included in files submitted to Government.

Users

Information recorded in the Course Structure and Planning subsystem is predominantly reference data. The ability to add, modify and delete data within this subsystem is restricted to certain categories of users who are the functional specialists responsible for maintaining details of the institution's courses and units. Most other users are provided with read-only access to this subsystem and will use course and unit details within other subsystems or through special enquiry or reporting interfaces. For example, course and unit details are used extensively in the Admissions, Enrolment, and Assessment subsystems.

Users of this subsystem should have a broad understanding of system-wide features and functionality. This manual provides the necessary information in the System Overview chapter. Help for a specific topic can be found using the Index.
