The following are examples of Government Discipline Codes:

• 0201: Behavioural Sciences
• 0405: Chemical Sciences
• 0604: Performing Arts
• 0805: Environmental Health

Explanation

Universities are required to report to government statistics concerning courses offered and enrolments in courses. These statistics include the attribute Discipline Group (element 336) specified in an appendix to the DEST manual. DEST allocates unique codes to group units of study into like disciplines within branches of learning. Where a set of institution defined disciplines has been defined (CRSF2110), each must be mapped to a particular Government Discipline Group.

To create a new Government Discipline Group record using the Maintain Government Discipline Groups form:

• Enter Insert Mode
• Enter the new DEST code in the Govt Discipline Group field of a blank record
• Enter the corresponding description for the DEST code in the Description field
• Save

To delete a Government Discipline Group record using the Maintain DEET Discipline Groups form:

• Find the record to be deleted
• Locate the cursor in the record to be deleted
• Delete record
• Save

Rules/Notes:

If a Government Discipline Group has been assigned to an institution defined discipline, it cannot be deleted. It can be closed, preventing any further use, by selecting the Closed check box.

A Government Discipline Group cannot be closed if any disciplines which map to it are OPEN.

To modify a Government Discipline Group record using the Maintain Government Discipline Groups form:

• Find the record to be modified
• Modify the record as required
• Save

Rules/Notes:

A Government Discipline Group should only be modified where the change is to correct an incorrectly entered description. A new Government Discipline Group should normally be created, in accordance with DEST specifications.

A Government Discipline Group can be closed, preventing any further use, by selecting the Closed check box.

Changes within this form will have the following notable effects:

• Adding a Government Discipline Group permits its use in the definition of an institution defined Discipline Group and hence for DEST statistical reporting
• Closing a Government Discipline Group prevents any further use
