Research Glossary

The terms used in the Research subsystem are described below. The relationships between data, and concepts used in this subsystem, are explained in detail in the Understanding Research section.

 

Field Name

Description

ABS RFCD

Is an check box (against a Field of Study code entered in STAF1123) showing that this is a Research Fields, Courses and Disciplines code as specified by the Australian Bureau of Statistics

ABS SEO check box

An check box which describes whether the SEO is an Australian Bureau of Statistics classification code or a DEST code

Anonymity check box

Specifies whether the panel member has requested anonymity. Setting the check box (ticked) means that the panel member wishes to remain anonymous as far as the candidate is concerned

Attendance History

Contains an entry for each change in a candidate's attendance percentage and attendance type. An entry will display a start and end date in addition to the percentage and type

Attendance Percentage

Describes the current attendance percentage of the candidate. The Attendance Percentage represents the total attendance of the research candidature and coursework unit attempts. Default percentages for each attendance type are recorded in the Maintain Attendance Types form, CRSF1170. The default values can be overridden

Attendance Type

Is the code of an institution-defined attendance type. An attendance type identifies whether a student is classified as part-time or full-time in the course, based on their study load in the reference year. Each attendance type must be mapped to a government attendance type (DEST element 330)

Citation

Is a text field for entry of citation information to be read during a graduation ceremony

Commencement Date

Is the date on which a research candidate commenced. The default date can be overridden

Confirmed Date

Is the date on which the thesis panel member accepted an invitation to become a member of the thesis examining panel

Declined Date

Is the date on which a proposed panel member declined a the place on the thesis examining panel

EFTD Used/Total

Are calculated values showing the number of effective full-time days a candidate has, in total, to complete research and the number of effective full-time days used as at the current date

Embargo Details

A text field to record the details of any embargo placed on the release of the thesis

Embargo Expiry Date

Is the date on which any embargo placed on the release of the thesis expires

Expected Submission Date

See Submission Date.

Field Of Study

Records a code representing the field of study applicable to the candidature. Two classifications are represented within a single structure permitting selection from the Australian Bureau of Statistics classification, or the DEST classification. The field of study percentage must total 100% for a candidature

Final Result

Is the final result which has been allocated to the thesis, after all thesis examination processes are complete. The result code selected must be mapped to a system result of type final. See Thesis Result Codes.

Final Result check box

Is set for certain system Thesis Result Codes, to indicate that the thesis result code is a final result. e.g. A 'PASS' is a final result, whereas a 'MINOR REV' result requires further work be done on the thesis

Final Title check box

Is an check box which specifies whether the nominated title is the final title for the thesis, or a working title. Setting the checkbox (ticked) indicates the thesis title is final

Industry Links

Is used to record any industries associated with the thesis / candidature

Library Catalogue Number

Is the library catalogue number of the completed thesis

Library Lodgement Date

Contains the date on which the research student's thesis was lodged in the library

Max Submission Date

Is the latest date the thesis can be submitted. This system derived value can be overridden. This is a required field for a candidature

Milestone Status

Is the institution-defined status set for a milestone. e.g. Planned, Achieved. These statuses show the progress of a milestone Each institution-defined status is mapped to a system-defined milestone status (one of 'PLANNED', 'ACHIEVED', 'FAILED', 'RE-PLANNED'

Milestone Type

Is one of the set of institution defined milestone types used to describe milestones. Examples: Six Monthly Report, Literature Review Report, Project Selection, Conference Presentation, Draft Thesis Available, Miscellaneous

Milestones - Date Reached

Is the date on which the milestone was completed, whether successfully or unsuccessfully

Milestones - Due Date

Is the date on which the milestone is due to be completed. It may be calculated (from the offset days value) or entered

Min Submission Date

Is the earliest date the thesis can be submitted. This system derived date can be overridden. This is a required field for a candidature

Notification Days

Are of three types (Imminent, Reminder, Re-Reminder). These are attributes of institution-defined Milestone Types. The functionality for triggering Milestone reminders is under development

Offset Days (Milestone)

Is a numeric value (representing a number of days) entered for a default milestone when defining course default milestones. This number is offset from the candidate's commencement date, in calculating the milestone due date

Paid Date

Is used to record the date on which a thesis panel member is paid

Panel Chair check box

Is selected for those thesis panel member types which can be the chairperson of an examining panel. It is selected for institution-defined types in RESF3184

Panel Member Type

Is a set of user-defined types of members on a thesis panel. Examples: Chair, Ordinary, Reserve

Recommendation Summary

Is a text field for entry of a summary of the examiner's comments in support of their recommended result

Recommended Panel Size

Is an attribute of the institution-defined thesis panel types

Recommended Result

Contains the recommended result submitted by the examiner

Research Calendar - Effective End Date Alias

Is the date alias linked to the system effective end date of a research teaching calendar. The EFTD (equivalent full time days) for a research teaching period is determined by the number of days between the research effective start and end date aliases

Research Calendar - Effective Start Date Alias

Is the date alias linked to the system effective start date of a research teaching calendar. Used to calculate the EFTD (equivalent full time days) for a research teaching period (i.e. the number of days between the research effective start and end date aliases)

Research Event Type

Classifies any event influencing a research student’s attendance history     

Research Percentage (Attendance Type)

Describes the attendance percentage allocated to an attendance type, for research students. e.g. Full-time 100%, Part time 50%

Research Topic

Represents the broad research topic of the candidature. More detailed descriptions are recorded against the thesis details. This is a required field for a candidature record

Scholarship Type

Is an institution-defined code to identify scholarship types. These must be mapped either to an Organisation Unit or to a Person ID

Scholarships - Conditions

This field describes any conditions which must be met to retain the scholarship. For example, maintenance of a minimum rate of progress may be a requirement of the scholarship. (No system functionality is implied)

Scholarships - Dollar Value

This field describes the dollar value of the scholarship, in the case where it is a monetary scholarship

Scholarships - Other Benefits

This field describes any other benefits which result from the scholarship. (No system functionality is implied)

Selection Criteria (Thesis Panel Type)

Describes textually the selection criteria for members of the examination panel, e.g. required qualifications, years of experience. Selection criteria can be recorded as an attribute of the institution-defined Thesis Panel Types

SEO Classification Code

Is used to record the Socio-Economic Objective applicable to the research candidature. A percentage value describes the percentage of the research effort applying to the objective

SEO Classification Code (Government)

A code representing the government Socio-Economic Objective classification. Two classifications are represented within a single structure permitting selection from the Australian Bureau of Statistics classification, or the DEST classification

Status (of a Thesis)

Are system statuses which show the progress of a thesis. The status will be one of: 'PENDING'. 'SUBMITTED', 'EXAMINED', 'DELETED'

Submission Date (Expected)

Is the date, nominated by the candidate, on which he/she expects to submit the thesis for examination

Submission Date (Last)

Is the date on which the thesis was submitted for examination

Supervision - End Date

Is the date on which a supervisor ceases their role as supervisor for the candidature

Supervision - Funding Percentage

Describes the percentage of the research load which is apportioned for funding purposes to the specified organisational unit

Supervision - Organisation Unit

Is an organisational unit for whom the supervisor is working when performing the supervision

Supervision - Profession

Is used to record the supervisor's profession

Supervision - Replaced Person ID

Describes the unique Person ID of the replaced supervisor allowing creation and maintenance of a supervision history for the candidature

Supervision - Start Date

Is the date a supervisor becomes effective for the candidature

Supervision Percentage

Is the percentage of supervision undertaken by this supervisor. This is recorded for the purposes of calculating the research load incurred by supervisors within an institution

Supervisor - Principal Supervisor check box

Is set where the supervisor type represents a principal supervisor. It is an attribute of Supervisor Type

Supervisor Type

Describes the institution-defined supervisor type. Examples are Principal Supervisor, Associate Supervisor, External Supervisor

Thesis Exam Type

The type of examination which is being undertaken. e.g. Written, Performance, Oral. An institution defines a set of types appropriate for use

Thesis Format

Is a text field to record the format of the thesis

Thesis Panel Type

Is the type of panel used for the thesis examination. An institution defines a set of panel types

Thesis Result (Thesis Exam)

Describes the thesis result entered against the thesis exam. It is an outcome of the panel members having provided their recommended results

Thesis Result Code

Is an institution-defined thesis result code. Institution-defined codes must be mapped to system equivalents. The set of system values includes final results of 'FAIL'; 'FAIL-ALT'; 'NO RESULT'; and 'PASS', together with two incomplete results - 'MINOR-REV' and 'REV-MAJOR'. Only final results can be recorded against a thesis. Final and incomplete results can be recorded against a particular thesis examination

Thesis Result Code (system codes).

These system-defined thesis result codes are mapped to an equivalent institution value. The system values are: 'FAIL'; 'FAIL-ALT'; 'MINOR-REV'; 'NO RESULT'; 'PASS' and 'REV-MAJOR'. The system results of 'MINOR-REV' and 'REV-MAJOR' are defined as interim results. The other four values are defined as final results

Thesis Topic

Is a text field containing the topic of the thesis

Title

The full title of the research student's thesis

Type Of Activity Code (Government)

A code describing one of the four types of Research and Development activity as defined in the Australian Standard Research Classification. The code which best reflects the research undertaken by the candidate is applied to a candidature record
