Structure Block Thesis Panel Type

An institution may have various types of examination panels for a thesis, appropriate to the type of research undertaken by candidates. Establishing an appropriate examining panel for a candidate (using the Thesis Details form - RESF3700) requires the allocation of one of the Thesis Panel Types, defined using this form.

The Thesis Panel Type provides guidance in relation to Recommended Panel Size and Selection Criteria, as these attributes of the Thesis Panel Type can be defined using this form. A Tracking Type can also be defined as an attribute of the Thesis Panel Type. This provides a set of tracking steps for use in controlling the process of establishing a Thesis Examining Panel for a candidature. (See TRKF1100 for further explanation of tracking types.)

The Thesis Panel Type block contains:

  • Thesis Panel Type
  • Description
  • Closed check box
  • Recommended Panel Size
  • Selection Criteria
  • Tracking Type
  • Description

This form is used to record the Thesis Panel Types appropriate to the institution. A Description must be entered. Recommended Panel Size and Selection Criteria can be defined, but are not mandatory.

A Tracking Type can be assigned to a Thesis Panel Type using this form. (Institution-defined Tracking Types must be created using the form TRKF1100 before they can be assigned to a Thesis Panel Type here. Only Tracking Types that map to the system tracking type 'RES_TEX' can be used).

Rules/Notes:

These types could include SMPANEL, FULLPANEL.

Recommended Panel Size is a guide only and, in use, panels can be larger than the number specified here.

Selection Criteria entries are used as a guide for someone establishing a panel and do not constitute validation rules.

Once used in the system, a Thesis Panel Type cannot be deleted. Select the Closed Indicator to prevent future use.
