Why study a psychology degree?

Health Hub at Casuarina campus

If you’re perceptive and patient, compassionate and curious, fascinated by people and how they think and feel, a psychology degree could be for you. Study your psychology degree with CDU and gain an understanding of the science of human behaviour. Learn foundational knowledge and skills from psychology experts and researchers, covering topics like abnormal and forensic psychology, cognitive and social psychology, counselling and the biological bases of behaviour. Learn the communication skills required to ask questions, listen and provide advice in line with your evaluation of a person's mental processes.

We are uniquely positioned to offer course units focused on Indigenous knowledges and well-being, alongside other specialist electives based on your interests and desired career pathways.

If you’re wondering about how to become a psychologist but not ready to commit to the bachelor’s degree, we also offer a Diploma of Psychology. The course will give you a broad intro into the field of psychology alongside counselling skills and trauma assessment, and acts as a pathway into the Bachelor of Psychological Science should you choose to continue studying.

Your career in psychology

Health Hub at Casuarina campus

Increased awareness of mental health has seen a rising demand for psychology-related occupations overall, from counsellors all the way to specialist clinical psychologists. The career outcomes for psychology degree graduates can vary greatly, from clinical psychology and consumer psychology to forensic psychology, school psychology and developmental psychology.

The Bachelor of Psychological Science is designed to prepare you to put theory into practice with a postgraduate degree in clinical psychology. It also includes several counselling units to provide more career pathways. You will enjoy classroom and hands-on learning that shapes your future as a professional psychologist and equips you with the skills you need to relate to people suffering mental health issues.

Whether or not you pursue a career in psychology, graduates of our undergraduate psychology degree develop skills that are highly valued across other professions, including critical thinking and problem solving, research and analysis of complex information, plus communication and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of human interaction and social cues can also give psychology students an edge in social situations, and behavioural psychology comes in handy for overcoming phobias or bad habits, or even managing stress and anxiety.
