Abstract
We live in an increasingly complex world which comprises many layers of micro to macro systems complexity. The solution to complex issues requires an understanding of integrated science linking social, organization, economical, physical, agricultural, media and communications, environmental, engineering as well as medical and health systems disciplines for driving translational research with societal impact locally and globally. In this presentation, Professor Liaquat Hossain will discuss the importance of integrated science for exploring global disasters and resilience. Theoretical and methodological foundations for integrated science and its application to global disasters and resilience will be provided. His studies within the context of disasters such as bush fire, flood and tsunami, disaster medicine and public health preparedness will be discussed. Professor Hossain will also discuss his on-going work in Social Media Surveillance in Ebola Disasters and Dynamic Evolutionary Networks of Digital Disease Surveillance: A Meta-analysis of Ten Years of Research.

About Professor Liaquat Hossain
Professor Liaquat Hossain has been investigating the functioning and robustness of hierarchical structures and potential problem leading to disruption or delay in the adaptation of behaviours for optimal functioning. His research aims to explore resilience, robustness, accuracy and precision of information flow in organisational, community and engineered complex systems i.e., effects of social networks and technology in supporting communication flow during crisis, coordinated interventions and delivery of health care and sociology of health, coordination of public health interventions, social networks in allied health service learning, effects of social networks in the delivery of nutritional health outcome. He has also been using social media analytics and social networks to explore disaster/crisis management and understanding resilience for dealing with disasters related to flood, fire, tsunami, disease outbreaks from food, zoonotic diseases and other man made and bio related security preparedness and response.
Professor Hossain has secured more than AU$10M in competitively research funding (2014 EU FP 7 4.5m Euro, 2014 $1.35m NHMRC-National Medical and Health Research Council Australia, $499k ARC Discovery, $720k CRC-Commonwealth Research Centre for Financial Markets, $320K CRC Bushfire, and $1.25m ARDA Advanced Research Development Agency in the US). At the University of Hong Kong, Professor Hossain has been able to develop a successful TRS HK$22M large collaborative proposal for HK RGC (Research Grants Commission) 2016 which has been funded for next 5 years. He has also been successful in developing regional partnership for conducting large experimental field study in Hong Kong and China with a focus on bio-security coordination project entitled “BioNet: Socio-technical Information Networks for Bio-security (Zoonotic/Foodbrone)”.
